It’s day three of GIFT SOS. Time to quiz the folks at Acorn on Atlantic Avenue (it’s the looker with a pretty mint green exterior, bright yellow bench out front and duo of tidy box trees). Anyway there’s good stuff inside too. Since opening 10 years ago they’ve become a go-to for parents in search of hard-to-find, hand-crafted and visually beautiful toys. So we knew we’d get some good-uns when we chewed over xmas gifts with co-owner Karin Schaefer. “Three is a great age, as imaginative play really takes hold” she says, “suddenly wonderful options open up: art supplies, blocks and costumes all support the developing creative mind.” So here we go! Below are Karin’s sure-fire toddler-pleasers for christmas morning.
The no expense spared block set
Blocks are a cornerstone of creative play and truly inspire hours of fun. This colorful set of 100 ($110), is one of the best there is. Each piece has been hand sanded and painted, using natural water-based stains in Germany.
The mini minstrel’s must have
We love this beautifully crafted Ukelele ($56), it can be tuned and played by musicians of all ages, yet is sturdy enough for young children, and comes kitted out with song book and tuning wrench
The cape of many colors
This rainbow silk cape ($30), is ideal for open-ended, dress-up play. What ever the want it to be: super hero costume, magicians outfit or princess coat, this colorful number fits the bill!
The best starter crayons
These non-toxic, beeswax crayons ($16) come in vibrant colors and are easy for small fingers to hold
The two-foot fishing pool (fish included!)
This magnetic Fishing Pole and Fish Set ($30) allows for fishing in every season and is US made using non toxic wood and paint
