We went snooping at the American International Toy Fair – the big daddy of toy pow-wows, with more than 1000 exhibitors – to find out what the year’s stand out trends are going to be. Consider yourself officially one step ahead of Santa.
1. Go big or go home. Large-sized toys are appearing in every category. Think super-sized inflatable toys, huge doll houses and mega remote-controlled cars. We have no idea where we’d fit all this, but can think of few kids who’d be happy to switch out their stroller for a 6v motorized Mario Kart ride on ($199.99, shipping mid-March,) pictured above.
2. Remote control gets seriously rad. Move over Angry Birds…why would any kid want to be welded to an iPhone when they can get their digit fix via a truck that launches projectiles or a robotic pet dinosaur. We think NERF Combat Creatures Attacknid ($79.99, above) will be one of christmas’ most requested: it’s a six-legged remote-controlled spider robot that can fire 25 foam darts up to 45 feet in rapid succession. Yikes!
3. It’s all about S.T.E.A.M. Toys that help kids to learn STEAM subjects (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Maths,) are set to take center stage in the form of Elenco‘s new forensic science kits, and more brilliant girl-focused engineering toys from GoldieBlox, pictured above.
4. Raid the attic. This will be the year several retro favorites make a comeback. Time to welcome back Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Tamagotchis (pictured above) as well as a host of original 80’s movie characters including Robocop, Terminator and Flash Gordon.
